The University of Washington Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship Program is a fully accredited one-year program designed for residents entering their PGY-5 year after completing a General Psychiatry Residency.
Our mission is to provide psychiatric physicians with the advanced training, clinical judgment, and specialized knowledge needed to practice Addiction Psychiatry, preparing them to become leaders in this important and growing field.
Clinical Training
Fellows gain experience across a wide range of clinical settings. You will work closely with interdisciplinary teams in environments such as:
- Inpatient units
- Intensive outpatient programs
- Outpatient clinics
- Consultation
- Dual diagnosis
- Women-focused treatment
- Opioid treatment settings
These diverse experiences help Fellows develop expertise in diagnosing and treating individuals with substance use disorders.
Didactic & Educational Opportunities
In addition to clinical training, Fellows participate in a weekly seminar series covering key topics in Addiction Psychiatry. Through this series, you will:
- Expand your scientific understanding of addiction
- Strengthen your research skills
- Build confidence and ability in teaching Addiction Psychiatry

A multidisciplinary research center at UW that coordinates addiction-related research and training. Fellows have access to the ADAI library, a valuable learning resource. - VA Center of Excellence in Substance Abuse Treatment and Education (CESATE) at VA Pugest Sound
CESATE offers the seminar series for Addiction Fellows, where Fellows participate alongside interdisciplinary trainees supported by the Center of Excellence.
